Esculin er en cumarinforbindelse fundet i bl.a. cikorie og i barken hos hestekastanie (Aesculus hippocastanum L.- deraf navnet esculin)) (Stanic et al. 1999). Esculetin er aglyconen til esculin, dvs. uden glucosegruppen. Esculin fluorescerer med excitation ved 335 nm og emission ved 515 nm (Coruh og Ozdogan, 2014)
