Some marine worms (e.g. Golfingia elongata) display a violet colour which originate from a non-heme iron protein hemerythrin. Vanadium is also present in the blood cells of some sea squirts (ascidia). The sodium-potassium ATPase is inhibited by vanadium (V⁵⁺) in nanomolar concentrations.
