Ved den anaerobe fermentering der foregår under lagringen af gylle (en flydende blanding af fækalier og urin) dannes der en lang række flygtige forbindelser hvoraf mange er potente lugtstoffer, dvs. lugtstoffer med en meget lav lugttærskel.
